FRAYSER, Tenn. (FOX13) - Bobby White, a graduate of Frayser High School is hoping to accomplish keeping his neighborhood school alive.

White is the founder of Frayser Community Schools, a charter school that took control of Frayser High on June 1. The 2014-15 school year will be White's first year operating a school under his charter and he is hoping his several years of experience as a teacher and administrator will help guide the students attending his alma mater.

White has walked the halls of Frayser High hundreds of times, graduating from the school in 1990. But this upcoming school year in August, White's walk down the hallways will have a different feel.

"This is personal," said the founder and CEO of Frayser Community Schools.

The charter school that will operate Frayser High starting in August as part of the Achievement School District. White and his staff will take on turning his alma mater around, which means everything from touching up paint, to touching up the school's reputation.

"Rebuilding anything, you want to make sure what people saw before," he said. "When they enter it again, there is an awe factor, so they're like, 'Wow, this is really nice!'"

White says he isn't in this mission alone.

"Community members, volunteers, alumni ... we've had alums come by the school from the '70s and '60s the last few weeks, all wanting to donate their time to volunteer," he said.

"I am a parent who likes to get in there and help wherever I can," added Catrina Brown, parent.

Some parents attending a meeting Thursday evening to discuss the charter school say they've witnessed White's leadership first hand when he was a principal at Westside Elementary.

"I was president of the the PTA at that school," recalls Monique Martin. "He's a good leader. He's there for the kids. He turned that school around."

Others not familiar with White say they believe in him because he's from Frayser.

"I'm really liking what he's talking about because I think my kids are going to like it here," said Tenica Williams

It's a personal mission White says he's determined to make work, with hopes success in the classroom will filter out into the community.

"I think it is very good for children to see someone who walked literally in their shoes at a point where they can give back and impact their lives in a positive way," he said.

Registration for the former Frayser High, which will be known as Martin Luther King Prep, will begin Monday, June 23.
