Continuing to fight Parvovirus, a highly contagious viral illness affecting dogs across the country, the Memphis Animal Shelter  has euthanized 14 dogs after two puppies testing positive for the disease June 14.

Twice as many dogs have been saved.

Crews have continued to sanitize the facility in the wake of the parvovirus.

MAS Medical Director Dr. Rebecca Coleman said parvovirus shows up in two ways, either through the intestines or the heart, and it often leads to death.

Dr. Coleman continues to ask pet owners to take basic steps to prevent the disease. She said vaccines are encouraged but are not considered a cure.

MAS recommends minimizing your dog's exposure to unfamiliar parks and staying away from unknown dogs.
