ST. CHARLES, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Three members of a west suburban family have been charged with running a cross-country marijuana delivery and money-laundering scheme out of their home.

Between Feb. 19 and April 2, Nicholas A. Salemi, 24; and Maryhelen Kwiatkowski, 32, shipped marijuana from California to Salemi’s parents in Kane County through the U.S. Postal Service, according to a statement from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s office.

Anthony W. Salemi, 56; and Gina T. Salemi, 52, then sent the money from the sale of the marijuana back to their son in California, according to the statement.

On June 11, authorities executed a search warrant at the Salemi’s home on North Glen Oak Lane in St. Charles and seized cannabis plants, as well as drug paraphernalia and marijuana, according to the statement.

Anthony W. Salemi is charged with three felony counts of money laundering; and misdemeanor counts of producing/possessing cannabis plants, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of cannabis, prosecutors said.

Gina T. Salemi is charged with two felony counts of money laundering. Both were released on bond and are scheduled to appear in court Friday.

On the same day, Nicholas Salemi and Kwiatkowski were arrested at their home in Fallbrook, Calif., and remain in custody at the San Diego County Sheriff’s department, where they await extradition to Illinois.
