FOX LAKE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) - A northwest suburban woman wanted for stealing thousands of dollars from a nonprofit that pays for a Fourth of July fireworks display turned herself into police Thursday.

Norren Michael, 47, of the 600 block of Spring Road in Ingleside, is charged with one count of felony theft over $500 for siphoning $8,700 from the Chain O’Lakes Fireworks fund between February 2011 and December 2012, according to Lt. Mark Schindler of the Fox Lake Police Department.

According to police, Michael used the money for personal expenses. The financial irregularities came to light when a board member noticed suspicious transactions on a debit card issued to Michael. The board member then contacted police.

A warrant for arrest was issued on Wednesday, the News-Sun reported.

The fireworks over the Chain O’Lakes and Fox Lake are organized by Keep The Spark Alive, which raised about $20,000 in donations and sponsorships.

According to officials, Michael was a part of Keep The Spark Alive until 2012.

The Chain O’Lakes Fireworks committee is $3,000 away from reaching its goal of $20,000, according to its website.

Donations can be made at keepthesparkalive.com via Paypal, or checks can be sent to P.O. Box 374, Ingleside IL 60041.

The last fundraiser before July 4 will be a Super Raffle from 5:30 to 10 p.m. June 21 at the Pistakee Yacht Club in Johnsburg.
