DOWNTOWN MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) - Interstate-55 into Arkansas was closed for eight hours before daybreak Wednesday after a big rig heading southbound crashed into the retaining wall on the bridge, which spans the Mississippi River, snarling traffic for several miles.

The accident was first reported at around 3 a.m.

The northbound lanes remained open even while the big rig, which was transporting food, was on fire.

According to several truck drivers, they said they heard chatter on the CB Radio about the accident. Truckers said the truck driver tried to avoid hitting a stalled suburban on the I-55 and ended up hitting the retaining wall three times.

After coming to a stop, the big rig caught on fire and both the truck and the trailer were destroyed. The trailer was loaded with groceries with all kinds of produce, beef, pork, and chicken.

The burned out big truck and trailer were pulled off the bridge and the contents of the trailer were loaded into dump trucks and then taken to a local dump. Thousands of dollars worth of food were destroyed.

A tow truck driver told FOX13 News that the driver of the Suburban ran out of gas and simply walked away. The vehicle reportedly did not have emergency lights flashing at the time of the accident.
