MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) - A Memphis man accused of pretending to be a bail bondsman finds himself on the wrong side of the law tonight.

TBI investigators say 61-year-old Isaiah Conway targeted members of the Hispanic community by taking money for bail bonds, even though he is not licensed to do so.

Investigators say he pocketed the cash.

Conway is charged with theft of property and impersonation of a licensed professional.

Media Release:

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has arrested and charged a Memphis man accused of portraying a bail bond agent and keeping the cash collected for himself.
At the request of 30th District Attorney General Amy Weirich, TBI Special Agents began investigating Isiah Hanks Conway on February 21, 2014. During the course of the investigation, Agents developed information that Conway was targeting members of the Hispanic community by taking money for bail bonds, though he is not licensed to do so. Investigators also believe he kept the funds collected for his personal benefit. Previously, on March 29, 2010, Conway pleaded guilty to Theft in a similar case investigated by the TBI.

This afternoon, with the cooperation of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, TBI Special Agents arrested Conway without incident and charged the 61-year-old with one count of Theft of Property over $1,000 and one count of Impersonation of a Licensed Professional. At the time of this release, Conway was being held in the Shelby County Jail.
