Black Bear Spotted In Another Jersey Town

Posted: Updated:
MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. -

Burlington County residents want gone a bear that keeps eluding capture.

Police say they want something done, too, but their hands are tied.

Evesham Township Mayor Randy Brown says the same black bear seen last week in Camden County has traveled through five towns and is now in Burlington County.

The Evesham Police Department says it has fielded dozens of calls from people who have seen the bear since Friday.

Residents and officials want the state's Division of Fish and Wildlife to step in and move the animal before it is hurt or hurts someone else.

But the state says the bear is better left alone.

"I am truly stunned by the way the state is reacting we called them Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday with its location, and they said, 'No, we'll continue to monitor the situation,'" the mayor said.

Bob Considine, of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, said, "We don't go out to get them if the bear is just being a bear he's acting usual he's not doing anything aggressive."

The mayor says local police don't have the authority to sedate the bear.

It was seen Monday morning in Mount Laurel, then in the woods near the intersection of Briggs and Union Mill roads.

"No threat to persons or property damage reported," Evesham police said in a public advisory. "Mount Laurel Police will continue to monitor the bear's activity until it moves out of the township."

FOX 29's Steve Keeley has the latest Tuesday morning from Mount Laurel.
