AMERICAN IDOL: Minn. singer says late mother blessed her with audition

Posted: Updated:
WOODBURY, Minn. (KMSP) -

Thousands of young people dream of going to Hollywood and being chosen to perform on "American Idol," but one from Minnesota says she knows her audition has been blessed from above.

On Wednesday, auditions will be held in Minneapolis -- and a 17-year-old Minnesota student who has been singing since she was 5 will be there as she tries to turn a recent loss into inspiration for a dream.

Maria Broshears recently lost her biggest fan -- her mother.

"She really thought I had something special in my voice and she really thought, 'Maria, you can really do something with that,'" Broshears said.

Now, the Woodbury senior who once got in trouble for singing in class hopes to punch a heartfelt ticket to Hollywood because she says she was born to sing, and performing on the show has been a dream she's held since she was 12.

"I would say, 'Mom, I'm going to be on that show. I promise you, I'm going to be on that show,'" Broshears recalled.

Throughout the years, Maria worked on perfecting her voice and performed in the school's talent show every year; however, as the teen prepared to sing "All of Me" in front of her family this past February, her life suddenly changed.

"That was the first time I've seen my dad cry, and he told me the news: My mom had passed away," Broshears said.

It was a sudden and unexpected loss.

"I was crushed," Broshears admitted. "I couldn't believe it."

Instead of performing at the talent show, she sang "You're Beautiful" at her mother's memorial service.

"She came to every single one of my performances, and to do it there, I felt it was a special moment for everyone to dedicate a song for her and celebrate her life -- and how great of a mom she was," Broshears said.

Broshears wants to honor her mother by continuing to pursue her dream, and when she found out auditions would be held in Minneapolis, she saw it as a sign.

"I thought instantly, 'My mom is giving me this opportunity,'" Broshears said. "She knew I loved 'American Idol' and here it is -- it's almost a blessing to me."

She will have the support of all her sisters, and her cousin plans to audition too -- but Broshears says she knows her biggest fan will be watching from above.

"She'll be watching me perform right up there," she said.

Broshears admits she is nervous for Wednesday and still doesn't know which song she will sing, but she is ready to try out.

Want to audition? We can help -- Fox 9 News is giving a way one "Judges' Silver Ticket Pass" at Mariucci Arena. The winner will get to skip the lines and move right into the second round, plus a meet-and-greet with the judges. Click here for more information.
