ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta officials say the city has joined a federal initiative aimed at increasing the number of employers who offer workplace charging for plug-in vehicles.

The city's director of sustainability, Denise Quarles, said this week that more charging points must be available and accessible to meet driver demand and is encouraging local businesses to sign up.

The U.S. Department of Energy launched the Workplace Charging Challenge in 2013 with the goal of increasing charging stations by tenfold in the next five years.

Currently, the city's Government Center parking deck has six chargers, available free of charge. The deck is located near city and state buildings downtown.

City officials say Atlanta was ranked second nationally last year for plug-in vehicle sales in North America.
