Congressman Nunnelee had surgery Monday at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston to remove a small mass on his brain. He is expected to be moved to a rehabilitation facility in about a week.

DeSoto County Supervisor and Board President Lee Caldwell is a close friend of Congressman Nunnelee.

"You know, it's very positive," Caldwell said. "Alan, he and his family have asked us to pray and so that is what we are doing, and we know that he is a fighter. I know it will take a while for even Alan to heal."

Caldwell says that this is not the first adversity that Congressman Nunnelee has faced. In college he began to lose his eyesight and had to have surgery with intense prayer beforehand.

"For a man that was blind and healed and now can see, he is a worker," Caldwell said. "You can't outwork him. He is always thinking of different ways to help the people of Mississippi."

Congressman Nunnelee has been key in helping North Mississippi with issues from education to flood control.

"Congressman Nunnelee has worked with DeSoto County and North Mississippi on many different programs," Caldwell said. "He has helped with Veterans affairs. Weekly I have been in touch with his office on issues with veterans."

Before he underwent, in an interview with FOX13 News, Congressman Nunnelee said he was more concerned with his work than with the surgery.

"I am encouraged by our health," Rep. Nunnelee said. "This is not something you pencil in and say I want to try to do on Wednesday of next week. We will continue to make decisions. I have been so encouraged by the outpouring of support by the friends all over the nation and Mississippi and I appreciate those prayers."
