FRAYSER, Tenn. (FOX13) - A surprise worth thousands.

High school students in Frayser are punching their tickets to Spain after hitting their fundraising goal of $44,000, thanks to the help of some Mid-South businesses.

State Rep. Antonio Parkinson (D-Memphis) helped organize a big surprise at the Frayser Exchange Club meeting Thursday afternoon.

MORE: Frayser students raise money for trip of a lifetime

"We hope that your trip to Spain will completely change your life and we have raised all the money," Rep. Parkinson said. "The rest of the money you need for your trip to Spain."

There were lots of smiles and hugs after the big reveal as students never saw it coming.

"We thought this was just another meeting," said T'Andre Morris, a member of the International Traveler's Club. "We never knew anything about it. That's why everybody was so surprised."

Students from the Frayser-based club thought they were coming to the meeting to beg for money as they were a few thousand dollars away from their goal of raising $44,000 to fund a trip Spain.

Little did they know, Rep. Parkinson had already received donations from Kroger, Superlo Foods and Methodist North to finish paying off their trip. The students have been raising money for seven months.

"We've done donations, car washes, reached out through churches and politicians ... everything to raise this money," said Bryshlan Patterson.

"We've been out in the rain, snow, hot weather, anything to do what we need to do to raise the money," added Alex Tallie, ITC sponsor.

Eleven students from Frayser will depart Spain on July 1. Most of them have never left the city of Memphis, yet alone traveled by plane.

"I'm nervous but then again, considering the fact this is a rare trip for a high school student, I just want to go," Morris said.

The teens say this trip is the highlight of their summer and Rep. Parkinson hopes the experience will inspire them to reach others in their community when they return.

"Come back as leaders with new ideas that you saw abroad and bring them back to this community so we can change other lives through you," Rep. Parkinson said.

The students are expected to return from Spain July 8.
