Trolley Service Halted

Posted: Updated:
DOWNTOWN MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) - What is Memphis without the trolleys? We're about to find out in the next 3 to 6 months.

The trolleys in downtown Memphis are iconic, but for the next few months they are non-existent.

So what does that mean for visitors now that the summer tourism season is in full swing? It's going to be devastating.

Two trolleys caught fire in less than a year. To be on the safe side, MATA leaders have now suspended all trolley service until further notice so they could do a full safety inspection.

In the meantime, a green bus will take the place of the iconic means of transportation.

1.5 million people catch one of these trolleys a year. It’s a tourist attraction all on its own and a cheap one.

Memphis native Alfred Scott says it's become a part of Downtown Memphis culture. Not to mention a way for some people to get to work.

"It’s just an easy way of getting around the city without having to drive and worry about parking. It's like a tour train," Scott continues.

Let's hope living without won't be too much of a "tour pain."
