MFD: Train Fire Intentionally Set

The Memphis Fire Department says someone set the fire that damaged 3 box cars at Barksdale and York in Midtown early Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out just before 5:30 am. 37 pieces of fire, rescue and EMS equipment and 97 emergency response personnel responded to the fire. The fire was completely knocked down around 8 am. No firefighters or civilians were hurt.

The box cars contained large amounts of paper products and sustained fire, smoke and water damage.

While fire investigators say the fire was intentionally set, the investigation is ongoing.

PREVIOUS:
A fire broke out on a railroad tanker on the overpass at Barksdale and York in Midtown Memphis Wednesday morning about 5:30am.

The fire eventually engulfed three cars. None of the cars involved in the fire were carrying hazardous chemicals, though some nearby cars were.

The fire was mostly put out by 7:25am. Railroad officials began moving the cars involved in the fire away from the immediate area.

 No one was evacuated from the highly residential area.
