MIDTOWN MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) - When Mike Armstrong downloaded the Next Door app he never thought it would be used to catch a criminal.

"A guy had walked up, stood on his front porch, knocked on his front door, and was supposedly selling magazines," Armstrong said. "He had a picture from his web cam, his security camera."

Neighbors posted on the app's crime section about where they last saw the alleged thief and warned neighboring communities.

"'Oh I just saw him over here on Linden' or 'I saw him over here on Peabody," Armstrong said reading the comments posted on the crime section.

Two weeks later Armstrong said he believed he saw the suspect.

"I was taking my fiancé to work," he said. "She works nights and I walked down there and we were driving down that way. I was like 'I swear that's that guy. I swear that's him from the shoes and the haircut.'"

Neighborhood watch meetings used to take place at a house, but Armstrong says with apps like Next Door all of that information is in your smartphone.

"Everybody can get on this app or website and keep in contact without having to go to one neighbor's house to get the story or call another one," he said. "Then it becomes a phish story. I can bloom into something that's not really real."

Neighbors continue updating on the app about the alleged package thief.

"The whole neighborhood came together," Armstrong said. "It's a cool sense of camaraderie with the neighborhood."

It's brought the Annesdale Park neighborhood together for more than just yard sales.
