Tracy Morgan crash brings issue of sleepy drivers to light

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - Police in New Jersey have learned the truck driver charged with causing a deadly crash that also critically injured Tracy Morgan was on the road half asleep.

Officials say the driver had been driving on the road after more than 24 hours with no sleep. But the crash is not the first time a sleepy driver caused a deadly crash.

In January of this year, a truck driver was accused of fudging his log and driving with little to no sleep. The driver was involved in a crash that killed an Illinois toll worker and seriously injured a state trooper. Both accidents bring up the important safety on the road.

On Chicago area expressways, semi trucks are a big part of the rush hour traffic flow. Illinois state troopers have spent three days checking books for logbook violations and unlicensed drivers. They say those inspections lead to many trucks being put out of service.

State troopers say careless truck driving is the greatest danger on the highway.

Truck drivers told FOX 32's Joanie Lum they are shocked the driver involved in the Tracy Morgan crash was awake for so long. Although, some of the drivers admitted they feel pressured to drive longer. They say they are paid by the load, so they try to complete one to get to another in order to make more money.

Drivers say it is up to companies to make sure that drivers are doing the responsible thing behind the wheel and in the books.
