Supporters of the Tennessee Wine in Grocery stores bill are hitting the streets for petition signatures.

They must have a number of signatures on that petition equal to 10 percent of the number of registered voters in each municipality who voted in the last gubernatorial election. They also have to turn that petition into the local election commission by Aug. 21.

In those communities where the referendum passes, grocery stores would be allowed to begin selling wine by July of 2016.

The first people to sign the Memphis petition told FOX13 News this is an issue of convenience for the consumer.

The wine in grocery stores bill passed both the Tennessee House and Senate and was signed by Gov. Bill Haslam in March. The group Red White and Food, sponsored by several Tennessee grocery stores and chains and the Tennessee Retail Association, has 70 days to collect the necessary signatures to put this referendum on the ballot.
