Police: Woman Stole Wallets And Credit Cards At Mt. Laurel Wegmans

Posted: Updated:
MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. - Mount Laurel Township Police want you to take a good look at some surveillance pictures.  They show a woman leaving a store after, police say, she stole wallets and credit cards from women who leave their purse in the cart while they shopped.  It happened at Wegmans on Centerton Road.

"I leave it where the kids would sit and then I leave the cart to get milk or something. Then I come back to the cart, so i'm not surprised that somebody would take advantage of that situation," said shopper Tiersa McQueen. She isn't alone. Plenty of women were not embarrassed to admit they leave their purses in the cart also.

"I'm one of those people that put it here too. I really try and watch it. It gets heavy," said one woman.

Laura Edwards said, "I
'm very guilty. I've been told by nice customers to watch what I've been doing with leaving my purse in the cart."

Lieutenant Stephen Riedener says one of the victims sat her wallet on the counter while using a card to check out and her wallet was stolen too. He says the suspect then used the stolen cards at stores near the Wegmans.

"There's several stores in that strip. She's used Target before and it's usually large purchases she tries to make," he said.

Diane Hunter isn't worried about becoming a victim. She said, "I
'm kind of conscious of it. I usually always carry it on my shoulder and don't put it in the cart at all."

Police say the woman strikes in just a matter of seconds when the shopper turns away. Hearing that, many women say they plan to change their habits.

"Well I'm not going to do it right now, I'll tell you that," said McQueen.
