MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) – -
A former Memphis judge is planning to attend this weekend’s celebration of life service for poet Maya Angelou.
D'army Bailey met Angelou in 1981. He and his wife Adrienne from Big Brother's Big Sisters shared many events with Angelou.
Bailey recalls Angelou’s tenacity as a civil rights activist and her compassion as a friend. He says she was genuine in her concern for equality for all.
D'army Bailey says, "I'll miss not just my personal connection with Dr. Angelou but I think there's a hole in the spirit of our presence in this country and on this earth that will never be filled with Dr. Angelou's passing."
A private ceremony for Angelou will be held at the Wake Forest Chapel in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on Saturday.
