Ceremony Marks 1 Year Since Deadly Center City Building Collapse

PHILADELPHIA -

Thursday marks one year since the deadly building collapse at 22nd and Market streets in Center City.

A ceremony was held in honor of the six lives lost and the 14 people who were injured in the collapse.

The city of Philadelphia says the site of the deadly collapse will be turned into a memorial park. The people who are constructing the park attended the ceremony, along with Mayor Michael Nutter and some of the victims' family members, who will ceremoniously plant the park's first tree.

Earlier this week, a survivor of the collapse, Mariya Plekan, addressed the media through an interpreter. The Ukrainian mother of two was rescued after she was found buried in the rubble 13 hours after the collapse.

Criminal charges have been filed against the demolition contractor, Griffin Campbell and the heavy equipment operator, Sean Benschop.

Campbell faces six counts of third-degree murder and Benschop is charged with six counts of involuntary manslaughter.

Earlier this week, a judge denied their request to drop some of the charges.

Since the collapse, officials from the city's Department of Licenses and Inspections have been putting new procedures in place.
