NORTH RIVERSIDE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) - A west suburban police SUV sustained major damage after another car crashed into it going about 60 mph, police said.

Just after midnight Tuesday, a Riverside sergeant cleared a vehicle for speeding on First Avenue, just north of 31st Street, according to a statement from Riverside police.

As he headed back to his SUV, the sergeant heard a loud screeching and saw an approaching vehicle speeding northbound on First Avenue crossing 31st Street, coming toward him at a high rate of speed.

The officer ran from the area onto forest preserve property just as the vehicle drove onto the sidewalk and struck his 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe, which was fully marked with its warning lights operating, police said.

The officer estimated the other car was going 60 mph when it struck the squad, causing considerable damage.

“The sergeant who had just cleared the traffic stop that he had made for speeding literally escaped with his life. If the officer had been in front of the squad car or in the squad car when it was hit by the offender, he would have been seriously injured or killed,” Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel said in the statement.

The driver, a 22 year-old North Riverside man, was trapped inside his car and had to be extradited by North Riverside Fire Department personnel, the statement said.

He suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, and was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he underwent emergency surgery, police said.

Police do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash but said “it is apparent that excessive speed did,” the statement said.

“There is no question that the driver was out of control as the officer observed the vehicle traveling towards his squad car driving on the sidewalk,” Weitzel said.

North Riverside and Riverside police are investigating the accident.
