Kennedy Ann Hansen’s Sweet Spirit Remembered By Family and Friends

Roy, UT -

Parents of 16-year old Kennedy Ann Hansen say she absolutely knew how to love. For most of her life, she was a healthy and vibrant young girl.

She loved to dance, sing, spend time in the outdoors, camp and hunt with her Dad. She was a beauty queen like her Mom and loved to do dress ups, doll parties and makeup parties. She owned every Monster High, Barbie or Twilight Doll available. She loved to ride horses, spend time with her cat Mario, her dog Sunny and her newest dog, Aggie

According to her obituary, “If you did not know Kennedy, you would learn how to love instantly with a Kennedy’s Hug. She HUGGED everyone she met and was a BEST FRIEND to all.”

Hansen’s life changed six years ago when her eyesight started failing.

"To be told you're going to be blind is a big devastator," her father Jason told DesertNews.com "It was shocking. But Kennedy never complained even one time about any of the issues.

Last June, Kennedy received another devastating diagnosis of Terminal Juvenile Batten Disease, an inherited disorder that primarily affects the nervous system, which ultimately took her life.

Kennedy was the only known case of juvenile Batten disease in Utah. According to her doctor, there were 500 known cases of Batten disease in the world and only 100 of them are juvenile.

"It's a mutated gene from Heather and a mutated gene from myself," Kennedy’s father Jason told DeseretNews.com. "And we happened to meet and fall in love, and the rest is history. It's a one in 500 million chance, is what (the doctors) say. It's like picking up a grain of sand."

Despite the fate the Hansen’s faced, the family continued a positive outlook for Kennedy by attending church and starting Kennedy’s Hugs . The foundation honors her parents to celebrate the final months of Kennedy’s time on earth and to leave a legacy that will help others in the future.

One of Kennedy's final requests was that her Kennedy's Hugs Bracelet's be sold in helping the Fremont Cheerleading fund and Kennedy's Hugs.
