Gas main explodes in Richmond, 2 injured

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, Mich (WJBK) -- Crews responded to and have given the all-clear after a gas main explosion in Richmond Tuesday afternoon.

The explosion happened on the 29100 block of 33 Mile Road.

Police confirm two men were injured and transported to the hospital for treatment. The 52-year-old and 23-year-old are said to be in stable condition.

Police also say a preliminary investigation has revealed a crew laying tile in a field ruptured a natural gas line, causing the explosion. Built in safety valves are said to have been automatically activated to shut off the leaking gas.

A FOX 2 viewer sent these pictures of smoke, which can be seen for miles.

The explosion is said to have occurred around 1 p.m. FOX 2's Erika Erickson reports the all-clear was given just before 6 p.m.

The communications manager at Bluewater Gas Storage, Meredith Hartley, released this statement:

"At approximately 1 p.m. EST today, a Bluewater Gas Storage pipeline experienced damage by a third-party contractor and ruptured, causing a release of natural gas in a rural area approximately three and a half miles west of Richmond Township. Two contractors working on site were taken to a nearby hospital and were treated and released. Bluewater Gas Storage has isolated the damaged section of pipeline to prevent further release of gas and first responders are on site. There is no current risk to area residents."
