Judge accused of punching attorney

Posted: Updated:
VIERA, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) - A Florida judge is accused of punching an assistant public defender during an altercation in a hallway outside a courtroom.

Judge John Murphy hit assistant public defender Andrew Weinstock after the two exchanged words over whether his client could have a speedy trial in the Brevard County courtroom.

Weinstock's supervisor, Public Defender Blaise Trettis said the judge grabbed Weinstock's collar in the hallway off the courtroom after the judge asked the attorney to come into the hallway.

"I thought it was a joke," Trettis told FOX 35.  "I didn't think he was serious."

Deputies broke up the fight.  Witnesses said only the judge came back out of the hallway after the melee, and he took his seat back on the bench.

Murphy wasn't arrested.
