Weekday morning dance raves in NYC

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

It looks and sounds like a dance party you'd find at a cool nightclub: house music, glow-in-the-dark jellyfish puppets, sweaty people packing the dance floor, and even live performing artists. But this New York City event called the Daybreaker isn't happening in the wee hours of the morning. This rave starts* at 7 a.m. and ends at 9 a.m. -- just in time for work.

Since January, rather than hitting the snooze before work, about 300 New Yorkers have been hitting the dance floor at local clubs. The Daybreaker dance party was created by New York City social entrepreneurs and best friends Mathew Brimer and Radha Agrawal. They say it is an experiment to see if people would go out and dance before work in a sober environment. No alcohol or drugs of any kind are sold or allowed at the event. Only coffee, teas and green juices are served. The experience is intended to leave party goers with a healthy, natural high.

Most of the people who attend are working professionals looking to connect.

What started as a once-a-month festival will soon be happening twice a month throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Most of their events sell out. The parties have become so successful that the creators told me that soon they'll be throwing them in cities across the world.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
