ANN ARBOR, Mich. - One thing cancer taught Lauren Hudson was that cancer survivors have a golden ticket to use, and it allows them to prioritize their need to find happiness.

Hudson, an Emmy award-winning reporter, author and cancer survivor, will spread her special brand of happiness during the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center's 20th annual Cancer Survivors' Day event. The free celebration will be from 1-3:30 p.m. Sunday, June 1, at Washtenaw Community College.

While being treated for breast cancer, Hudson realized her physical condition - fatigue, loss of appetite, sleeplessness - masked serious depression, a condition that many cancer survivors experience.

"We all go through various challenges that can affect both our mind and our bodies. That's why it is key to be at the top of our mental game," says Hudson, who appeared on WKBD-TV, Channel 50, for more than 15 years.

National Cancer Survivors' Day began in 1987 as a way to show that a cancer diagnosis is not an automatic death sentence. The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship defines a cancer survivor as anyone living with a history of cancer, from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life. There are now 12 million cancer survivors in the United States.

In addition to Hudson's keynote speech, the U-M event will allow survivors and their families to explore informational exhibits and resources focused on healthy lifestyle choices, cancer research and advocacy, and supportive services. The event will also include entertainment, light refreshments and door prizes.

The free Cancer Survivors' Day event is open to any cancer survivors, including family and friends. Survivors do not need to have been treated at U-M to attend.

Cancer Survivors' Day
When: 1-3:30 p.m., Sunday, June 1
Where: Washtenaw Community College, Morris Lawrence Building, 4800 E. Huron River Drive, Ann Arbor
