Smoking approved by House for tobacco convention in Rosemont

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - The Illinois House voted to allow the Stevens Convention Center in Rosemont to host a tobacco and tobacco product convention late next summer. However, it all depends on if State Rep. Mike McAuliffe’s amendment to SB 852 is adopted in the Senate, according to a report.

Democrat Rep. Ann Williams encouraged her fellow colleagues to oppose the vote, but republicans argue lifting the smoking ban for two days for the convention would attract jobs and encourage economic activity to the area.

"This will weaken Illinois being smoke-free," Williams said. "Using the slippery slope argument, wouldn't you be concerned other towns would ask for a similar exemption?" she asked McAuliffe.

He responded that he does not expect more legislation to surface that would provide exemptions to the state’s Smoke Free Act.

The Illinois Senate will need to confirm the changes made to SB 852 by the House, before it’s sent to Gov. Pat Quinn. The House passed the bill with a 78 to 35 vote Friday.
