SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - It's the kind of crime that makes you shake your head and wonder why. An outdoor classroom under construction at Sonoran Sky Elementary School in Scottsdale gets torched.

Everyone at the school was busy raising money to finish the project, and now this. Now Scottsdale Police are investigating.

This project funded with cash raised directly by students, staff and parents at Sonoran Sky Elementary School. But the school's new outdoor classroom got torched over Memorial Day weekend.

"It just appears somebody jumped over the fence and set fire the tables here in the outdoor classroom," said Bianca Cords with Sonoran Sky Elementary School.

Thousands of dollars in damages, committed by vandals who snuck onto the property, new picnic tables burned to cinders.

"It's disappointing everyone has worked so hard on this project," said Cords.

"These tables were built specifically for us for these classrooms," said Joe Muth.

Everyone at Sonoran Sky has been raising money for this new outdoor classroom.

Construction was in the first phase, with pavers for the courtyard, and tables and desks installed a month ago. But police say vandals jumped the fence and burned up three of the tables.

"We think something happened between Saturday night and Monday night because we discovered it yesterday morning," said Cords.

Stains on the pavers gave police an idea of how an accelerant was used to spread the flames. But the school's plans won't be derailed; they'll move forward and expand an existing pond into a garden where students can sit and write in their journals in the outdoor classroom.

In the meantime, the school must re-build.

"Not to sound melodramatic, but it was a labor of love," said Muth.

Workers hope someone will come forward with a tip about who tried to destroy their outdoor classroom.

"I don't know what type of person would do this anywhere," said Cords.
