SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (FOX13) - A driver is dead and a passenger has been charged.

Both were involved in the car that ran over a Southaven police officer during an undercover drug sting yesterday.

Southaven police say Jeremy Vann was behind the wheel when he ran over the officer during an undercover drug deal in the parking lot at the Big Lots. Vann was shot by that officer when police say he tried to hit him again.

Vann died on the scene.

A suspected drug dealer is dead and a Southaven Police narcotics officer is in the hospital following a narcotics operation on Stateline Road in a department store parking lot.

According to Southaven Police the suspect allegedly ran the officer over with his car and was trying to hit him again when other officers opened fire.

LeDarrion McDonald, who works at the tire shop across the street from the incident, heard all of it and saw some of it.

"Well, really the first shot I thought it was a blown tire," McDonald said. "I work on tires, all the time. I didn't pay attention until the second shot."

After that second shot McDonald said the parking lot was swarming with police cars.

"We have a narcotics incident that is under investigation. We did end up with shots fired," said Southaven Police Chief Tom Long.

According to DeSoto County District Attorney John Champion during the narcotics operation in the Big Lots parking lot just two blocks from a Southaven Police station. The driver of a black sedan ran over one of the narcotics officers.

"No, he ran one of the officers over and backed up and was about to run over the officer again when shots were fired," D.A. Champion said. "Well, you can't run over a police officer and not expect something to happen."
 Champion said

The driver of the car later died at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis. Another suspect in the car was taken into custody and a child in the car is now in custody of Department of Human Services.

"At this time the officer is doing well," Chief Long said. "The officer was not shot. He was struck by the vehicle."

The investigation of the police-involved shooting is being handled by the DeSoto County Sheriff, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, and the DeSoto County District Attorney's Office.
