HS senior killed in car crash honored at graduation

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. - A graduating senior killed in a car crash Tuesday night was honored at the Etowah High School graduation ceremony.

Lucy Boettcher, 18, was killed in the single-vehicle crash on I-285 this week. Boettcher was set to graduate Friday evening.

Boettcher is the third student to pass away in the 2014 Etowah HS class over the past four years. Three chairs were left empty in their honor at graduation.

“I'm just going to try and keep my head up and know that she's with me,” said Hailey Lyerley, Boettcher’s best friend.

Boettcher’s name was called at graduation and her diploma was received by her younger brother.

A vigil was held at Etowah High School Wednesday evening to honor the victims killed in the deadly crash. Darius Valcarcel, 22, died alongside Boettcher. Valcarel graduated from Etowah HS in 2010.

Anthony White, Boettcher's boyfriend, survived the car accident and was amongst the many students mourning her loss at the vigil. Close friends who loved her joined strangers who barely knew her.

"She was always a bright, brilliant person, she could light up a room with her smile," said White.

The wreck was on I-285 Eastbound between Chamblee-Tucker Road and Ashford-Dunwoody Road. Two other people suffered non-life threatening injuries, including Boettcher’s boyfriend.

The accident blocked most of the Eastbound lanes of the perimeter and had traffic backed up for miles.

According to investigators, the initial reports indicate a passenger distracted the driver which caused her to lose control of the SUV.
