SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - On this Memorial Day police officers with the Salt River Police Department  stopped to remember one of their own killed in the line of duty. Many of them taking to the streets cracking down on drunk drivers. But they're doing so with heavy hearts.

37-year-old Jair Cabrera was on patrol early Saturday morning when he was shot and killed. Officers stopped Monday night to remember him before they hit the streets.

Before starting their shift, this evening officers from the Salt River Police Department rode in one by one to pay their respects to one of their own killed in the line of duty.

"He was a special person, very kind generous truly a great gentleman, it's a sad loss, it truly is a loss," said one officer.

A memorial continued to grow outside this gas station where 37-year-old Jair Cabrera lost his life.

Officer Cabrera made a traffic stop early Saturday morning near the corner of Pima and Chaparral. Before he could get out of his patrol car, three suspects inside the car shot him through his patrol car windshield.

He was taken to the hospital where he later died; the three suspects were all arrested.

"One of his specialties was DUI, he was one of the most proficient DUI investigators, and that's the reason he was out that night," said an officer.

"He was looking for drunk drivers and making our community safe, that's what he does, that's what police do," said the officer.

Officers remembered him as an outstanding officer who loved his job and as a caring and compassionate person.

"There's no question in my mind that his memory will live on, like I said he was a special person, there was no doubt every one of us he touched in our hearts, so there's no question," said a police officer at the memorial.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is still investigating this incident.

The Police Department will hold a candlelight vigil at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Chevron station at Pima and Chaparral roads on the community.

Public visitation for the officer will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at West Rest Haven Mortuary in Glendale, followed by the memorial service at 10 a.m. Friday at Christ Church of the Valley in Peoria.

Burial will follow at Phoenix Memorial Park and Mortuary in Phoenix.
