RED WING, Minn. (KMSP) -

The Minnesota State Patrol is currently investigating a deadly crash and police pursuit that left a 24-year-old driver from Farmington, Minn. dead after crashing into a tree on Sunday morning.

The chase began in Farmington when Cody J. Swanson, who was driving a stolen 2011 Buick, fled officers just off Highway 61 near the Red Wing Shoe Company in Red Wing, Minn. heading eastbound on Cannon River Avenue. Swanson then left the road, striking a tree around 4:35 a.m.

Swanson had a long criminal history that included convictions for burglary, drugs and traffic violations. Officials also say he did not have a valid license at the time of the crash.

Police say they attempted to pull Swanson over after noticing that a headlight was out, but he took off instead and led officers on a 37-mile chase. Swanson apparently evaded Goodhue County deputies, Dakota County deputies and Red Wing police, and even though officers deployed spike strips near Red Wing, he continued on at a high rate of speed anyway.

When Swanson came upon Cannon River Avenue, police say he lost control and drove a few hundred yards down a hill before slamming the car -- which was reported stolen in Scott County last month -- into a tree.

Assisting agencies include:

-Dakota County Sheriff's Office
-Goodhue County Sheriff's Office
-Red Wing Police Department

No officers were injured in the pursuit. One police officer identified only as an 8-year veteran has been placed on paid standard leave, though police have not released any further details.
