Plan announced to restore state veterans' memorial

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (AP) -- Veterans groups have joined public, private and nonprofit individuals and groups in announcing plans to restore Detroit's 75-year-old Michigan War Veterans Memorial.

The leaders from several organizations gathered Friday morning at the street corner monument at the former Michigan State Fairgrounds. Organizers say a partnership created to protect and preserve the memorial is getting $100,000 from the state.

The 35-foot-tall monument honoring veterans of all wars and conflicts will be moved to a park on the former fairgrounds property. It was dedicated in 1939, nine days after Germany's invasion of Poland and the start of what became World War II.

Those attending included state Democratic Sen. Virgil Smith and Dick Chatman, past department commander of the State of Michigan American Legion.
