EF-1 Tornado Struck Kent County, Weather Service Confirms

Posted: Updated:
KENT COUNTY, Del. -

The National Weather Service has determined that storm damage Thursday in Kent County Delaware was in fact caused by a tornado.

The weather service said Friday that it was an EF-1 tornado that struck the area. The Enhanced Fujita scale says an EF-1 can pack winds from 86 to 110 mph.

In the case of the 4:49 p.m. tornado Thursday near Marydel, which was embedded within a swath of straight-line winds, the NWS says it had an estimated maximum wind speed of 105 mph. It was about a third-of-a-mile wide, lasted two minutes and traveled a short distance.

The weather service previously said it had a report of a funnel cloud around 4:50 in the area of Hartly, Del., from a local emergency manager.

Two injuries were reported as a result of the tornado, but fortunately both have survived.

Residents are rebounding after having to run for cover during the Tornado Warning that was issued as the storm came in. And some have been left with a big mess to try and clean up.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley reported from Wyoming all morning long for "Good Day Philadelphia" on the storm's aftermath. He spoke to neighbors who said one home was picked up and "spun like a top" in the air before crashing back to earth. An injured resident was found in the debris beneath a mattress with a face full of glass. The complete interview is in the videoplayer.

And SkyFOX flew over the area to get an aerial look at the damage. You can see images from that flight in the slideshow above.
