The driver of an 18-wheeler that overturned in a ditch on I-240 eastbound near Millbranch and caught fire Thursday evening has died.

The driver of the big rig was pulled out of the wreckage and was taken to the Regional One Medical Center in extremely critical condition. He was later pronounced dead, Memphis Police spokeswoman Sgt. Karen Rudolph said.

I-240 was at a standstill for over two hours Thursday evening after the 18-wheeler rolled over, police said.

Two other vehicles were involved in the traffic crash, which took place at around 8:45 p.m. The condition of the other drivers are not known.

TDOT said the accident site was expected to be cleared by 10:30 p.m. Eastbound traffic was diverted to alternate routes.
