SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. (FOX13) - Is Shelby County Schools Superintendent Dorsey Hopson making the grade? District board members let the public answer that question Thursday evening.

SCS held a community forum at the board auditorium, discussing the criteria for evaluating Superintendent Hopson. The district will grade his first year based on several categories, including his relationships with board members, the community and SCS staff, his management of facilities and finances, and his vision for the district.

After explaining the evaluation process, board members opened the floor to citizens to comment on Superintendent Hopson's performance.

"I want to say the superintendent is very impressive," said Veronica Collins. "He has a rapport regardless of your nationality, regardless of what age you are, regardless of what side of the city you live on, his rapport is there."

"I was hoping there would be a search as his contract came up to find somebody with an EDD or PHD in education, especially having experience in inner city," said Valerie Griffin.

"I remember you coming in at a time when it was just major chaos," added Ryan Carson. "It was a time with one of the biggest school mergers in the United States was going on. So, your commitment to stand in the midst of that and show leadership sends a message to young professionals, like myself."

Superintendent Hopson signed a three-year deal in September 2013 with SCS, with a base salary of $269,000.
