EAST MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) - Take one of the busiest avenues in Memphis, add overflow traffic from the construction on I-40 and I-240, and then factor in a traffic accident.

Summer Avenue is the new worst traffic jam in town.

Traffic during the morning rush hour on eastbound Summer Avenue looks no different that westbound Summer. Either way it's a jam.

You add in one car rollover with three injuries and you have what's know in the world of traffic reporters an area to avoid.

The folks that work at the Waffle House on Summer Avenue say some of their regular customers have been staying away during rush hour because they are afraid they will get trapped in the parking lot and not be able to get out.

Down the street at Leno's Liquors business is a lot slower when afternoon rush hour is taking place. It's all part of the construction project on The Flyover on I-40 and I-240. Traffic that used to be on I-40 has now been routed over to Summer Avenue and that is now causing problems for businesses along the street.

"Defiantly, especially coming down Summer its a lot slower, a little bit congested," said Tom Uphold of Golf and Games Family Park. "There has been some concern by some people that congestion will not stop but so far we really have not seen an impact yet."

Down the street at Auto Glass Now the added traffic is slowing down service.

"As far as my deliveries so it has, it's held up by customers waiting on my parts to be delivered and they just have to wait," said Damon Purdy of Auto Glass Now. "Well, fortunately I leave early enough to get here on time but it does give my employees they got an excuse for being late now."

The staff at Golf and Games Family Park says they are lucky as most of their business takes place on the weekends.

"But for the most part they are going to be here on weekend and I think they are planning on not working seven days a week, so that should help us out a little bit, to help us out so,' Uphold said.

The bad news is that the newest worst traffic jam in Memphis will continue for the next 18 months as freeway construction continues.
