MIDTOWN MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) - “This is the park. It’s not a parking lot,” said Ethel Lyons, a frequent Overton Park patron, “All of the grass is dead from this and it’s ruining the grass and disturbing people’s peace of mind. This is a beautiful park and it definitely takes away from it.”

It’s comments like this that got the wheels rolling on an immediate yet temporary solution after the Memphis Zoo locked horns with Overton Park about visitors parking on the Greensward.

“As the park becomes a more popular place, then the need for parking becomes even great. Now is the right time to try this out,” said Tina Sullivan, Executive Director of the Overton Park Conservancy.

Two shuttles, each able to hold 25 people, will run consecutively on Saturdays and Sundays, picking up visitors at the Overton Square Parking Garage and dropping them off at various Overton Park locations.

“We’ve been exploring shuttles for more than a year,” said Sullivan, “We tried it a couple of times last year on some really busy days and once again this year this spring.”

The shuttle trial hits the brakes after five weeks. A more permanent solution to parking problems, especially at the zoo, are in works.

“The zoo and Overton Park Conservancy agree that there should be a garage to accommodate zoo patrons, and we stand ready to help the zoo with fundraising when the time comes,” said Sullivan.

The more people who ride the shuttle the next five weekends, the more likely the service will continue every weekend.

If they are able to secure funding, the shuttle service could expand not only on more weekends but also to weekdays.
