DOWNTOWN MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) - Hours after they dismissed him as a suspect in an overnight carjacking and stabbing of a Whitehaven woman Tuesday, Memphis Police arrested Derrick Fifer.

Police arrested the 23-year-old just hours after he told FOX13 Good Morning Memphis reporter Brooke Thomas he was innocent in a live interview.

"I ain't fixing to stab no kids. I just got out of prison. I love my life," Fifer said.

This story has gone through twists and turns once it broke Tuesday morning. Fifer went from suspect to cleared man and back to a suspect in jail in less than 24 hours.

Police said during its investigation, it was determined that the 23-year-old Fifer was indeed responsible for the carjacking and kidnappings. Fifer was charged with aggravated robbery, two counts of especially aggravated kidnapping, criminal attempt aggravated kidnapping, theft of property $1,000 - $10,000 to wit motor vehicle, and aggravated assault.

He may not have stabbed any kids but police say Fifer did stab a 22-year-old woman nine times before he allegedly stole her car with two small children inside. Police say they found those kids shortly after in separate spots. Each child was alone, in the dark, far away from the scene.

Wednesday we learned officers say there was a third child, a five-year-old, in the Cadillac Escalade at the time of the stabbing. Police say that child jumped out of the SUV as Fifer drove off with her brother and sister.

Not only is he saying he didn't do any of this, Fifer wanted to say it on live TV and walked right up to me at the scene of the crime. Fifer told me he knew the victim, would never hurt her, and needed to clear his name.

"She know me, she know me," Fifer said. "She know I wouldn't do nothing like that."

Police agree she knows him. They say she picked him out in a line-up as the person who stabbed her and kidnapped her kids.

It was quiet in the 500 block of Pleasant where the alleged stabbing and carjacking took place Wednesday. Much different than it was Tuesday when all this was going on. Neighbors say they aren't fazed by the new developments, but they are ready for the crime to end.

"I know I didn't do nothing," said Fifer, who had a lot to say to me but not to the Shelby County General Sessions judge Wednesday during his video arraignment.

Fifer kept his head down the entire time he talked to the judge. The judge on the other hand let him know he's facing six charges, including robbery, kidnapping, and assault, and that he'll sit in jail until that changes or he comes up with $750,000 for his bail.

He's due in court May 28.
