TUPELO, Miss. (FOX13) - Almost a month after an EF-3 tornado slammed into the city of Tupelo the city continues to dig out faced with the overwhelming task of debris removal. Now the city is asking for volunteers.

The city of Tupelo asking for a massive volunteer effort this Saturday to get the debris from peoples yards out to the street so they can pick it up.

"We still have hundreds of thousands of cubic yards of debris that has to get removed from yards and homes. We have to get that debris to the curb so we can pick it up with the heavy equipment,” says Mayor Jason Shelton.

The volunteer effort is being coordinated by the United Way.

"Hopefully we can get a couple thousand people in Tupelo to really make a huge dent ...we have to get the debris out of people's yards and into the front yard to the curb," Shelto said.

Because of the types of trash and debris organizers strongly suggest any volunteers wear protective clothing.

"It is important to make safety a priority we suggest hard soled shoes, work gloves, protective clothing to make sure you don’t get a nail or cut from debris removal," Shelton said.

To become a volunteer in Tupelo this Saturday go the United Way at 608 Jefferson Street or call the United Way in Tupelo at 662-687-2735.
