MIDTOWN MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) - Overton Park Conservancy will host a free parking shuttle from the Overton Square garage beginning this Saturday, May 24.

The five-week pilot program is designed to ensure that visitors can access the park and its cultural attractions safely and conveniently, while avoiding the traffic congestion, long waits, and difficulty locating a parking space that can occur on busy weekends.

The shuttle will make its first pickup at the corner of Monroe and Florence, at the entrance to the Overton Square garage, at 10:00 a.m.  It will run to the park, stopping at the entrance to the Memphis Zoo, the Brooks Museum of Art, and the Overton Park golf clubhouse before returning to the garage.  Shuttles will run every 10 – 15 minutes, with the final pickup in Overton Park occurring around 5:15 p.m.  The shuttle will run Saturdays and Sundays, May 24 – June 22.  Parking at the Overton Square garage is free until 6:00 p.m. daily.

The shuttle program was developed in collaboration with the City of Memphis as an alternative to the use of the park’s Greensward for the Memphis Zoo’s overflow parking. Mayor Wharton has expressed a desire to end this practice by the end of 2014, and during the shuttle’s pilot run, no parking will be allowed on the Greensward.  The Conservancy plans to continue to work with the Zoo and the City on long-term solutions.  In the meantime, the shuttle is intended to keep the park accessible to its visitors while reducing congestion on the park roads.  It’s also an opportunity to highlight the renaissance of Midtown as a whole, where improvements to Overton Square coincide with the Conservancy’s investment in Overton Park’s amenities and maintenance.

Up-to-date information about the shuttle’s route and schedule can be found here.
