PHOENIX (KSAZ) - The family of a high school senior arrested after threatening to shoot up his high school with an AR-15 rifle speaks to FOX 10.

The teen's family says he's an honors student and graduating at the top of the class.

"For my senior prank i'm going to bring an AR-15 to school and kill everyone," said Nicholas Goettl in a tweet.

As a result, 18 year-old Nicholas Goettl was booked into the fourth avenue jail for threats and interference with an educational institution.

At Boulder Creek High School and beyond everyone agrees: As attempts at humor go, Nicholas Goettl's tweet was about the dumbest joke anyone could come up with. Now his grandmother is afraid he will lose the opportunity of a lifetime.

"Yes, he was accepted to the honors college at ASU and all these scholarships," said Mary Stapek.

His grandmother says Nicholas ranked 26th out of class of 560 kids. He wants to study biochemical engineering at ASU.

"He just feels horrible, he feels horrible, he knows what he did, and he is internalizing it, we cannot get him to eat or sleep, it is just a tragic thing," said Stapek.

Nicholas is finding support at his high school.

FOX 10 asked a student if Nicholas should be able to walk for graduation, "Yes I think he has achieved a lot academically, and that should not be taken away from him," said Samika Mendoza.

Students also say there's a lesson in this: use social media wisely.

"You just have to be careful because it does affect you, you have to think about what you do, and what you say when you are young, even though you think you are having fun, and it is harmless, it is not," said Hanah Glynn.
