Killebrew's hospice care for children initiative lives on

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Twins great Harmon Killebrew spent his final days in hospice care and his wife says he always wanted a place as an option for all the seriously sick children in Minnesota. There are currently no hospice care facilities specifically for children. Now his former teammates and some parents are trying to carry on his cause.

Four-year-old Levi Shu might have felt like a baseball superstar with an entourage and adoring fans. His parents even carried him onto Target Field for his first Twins game.

“We got to see Levi engage with this environment,” said Levi’s mother Dannell Shu. “He’s looking around, he’s listening, he’s paying attention.”

That is major progress, especially for a child who isn’t even supposed to be there.

“Everybody was all about death and hopelessness,” said Levi’s father Peter Shu.

Levi was born severely brain damaged and doctors wouldn’t say if he’d survive. While he has defied all the odds, a team of doctors and nurses still come into his home to help with any pain or suffering.

“We’re here to come out on days like this and be cheerleaders and advocate for the 9,000 families across the state of Minnesota that are living in the same situation we are living in,” said Dannell.

Surprisingly, there are no children’s hospice care facilities in Minnesota and only three in the entire country. A place where seriously ill kids and their families can come for support and recharge from the demands of round the clock care. But with the star power of Twins legends like Jack Morris and the wife of the late Harmon Killebrew who advocated for sick kids after his career came to a close.

The Children’s Lighthouse of Minnesota is trying to build the state’s first children’s hospice care facility. The goal is to raise 10 million dollars and build the first facility in Chaska by the spring of 2015. It is a huge undertaking
