DOWNTOWN MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) - Though the Memphis in May World Championship BBQ Cooking Contest doesn't officially kickoff until Thursday, Tom Lee Park downtown is already "sizzling" with activity.

The park overlooking the Mississippi River is already a city with the structures that will house more than 250 cooking teams through Saturday night.

For some the past few days has been primo time.

"I agree, it's a nice time to be down here and the weather is beautiful today, too," said Cindy Cockrill of Team Swine & Dine. "Most people have never seen it that way. They come when all the crowds are here. They wait to get here on Thursday when you can't hang out and just relax and get a little work done and enjoy your people."

"You could not ask for a better situation out here," added Norm LaChapelle, Victory Lane Cooking Team. "Everybody is having a good time. Like I said, calm before the storm and were getting ready to win the world championship of BBQ. Nothing else like it in May in Memphis."

A few days before the official start Thursday is the favorite part of the entire BBQ festivities. The very beginning is peaceful, it's quiet. Quiet as Ole Man River rolling by. It's before all the craziness starts, and believe me a lot of craziness is still to come.

"Friday is crazy and we have some neighbors we've been near for years," Cockrill said. "They're the Parrot Heads and The Voodoo. They have been next door to us for years and this is a party . This is a lot of the time on Friday night you can't get past us. So Swine & Dine, so plan to stop by. Swine & Dine is a great time."

Don't forget about Victory Lane.

"This is the Taj Mahal, is what's going to be happening this weekend," LaChapelle said. "You're welcome to come by to Victory Lane and it's always good for a drink and something to eat."

Now you know where to go if you want loud music, food, and drink. Cause you already missed the quiet time.
