Progress reported in small fire in Prescott Forest

Posted: Updated:
PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) - Firefighters are making significant progress in keeping a small fire from spreading as it burns in ponderosa pine in the Prescott National Forest.

Forest spokeswoman Debbie Maneely says firefighters from several agencies now have hoses positioned around the entire fire and have kept it to between 1 and 2 acres as they work toward containment.

A helicopter is dropping water on the fire, but Maneely says the incident commander is not requesting additional resources, and she says that could be a good sign.

The fire started Tuesday morning near Walker. That's an area about 10 miles southeast of Prescott and about six miles south of Lynx Lake. The area has both seasonal and fulltime homes.

The Red Cross has set up an evacuation center in Prescott as a precaution.
