Shelby County Commissioner Steve Mulroy, who donated his kidney in May 2013 to a stranger, is being recognized nationally for his selfless act.

On Thursday. May 15, Mulroy will be in New York City to receive the "American Hero" award from the National Kidney Register for his "non-directed" kidney donation. It sparked a record-setting chain of donations.

The hero award is designed to raise public awareness about the need for persons to donate kidneys, even if they do not personally know someone in need of a kidney transplant.

In addition to receiving the award at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, Mulroy will also be asked to speak, and to present another award to teams of medical workers who helped arrange the lengthy organ donation "chain" which started with his kidney donation in Memphis.
