D.C. police are looking for two men who assaulted and robbed a 60-year-old man early last Tuesday morning on Capitol Hill. It was an assault so vicious that the man later died.

Police said the men stole cash from Carlton Coltrane before beating him so severely that he was hospitalized twice before dying Friday afternoon.

According to a police report, Coltrane was conscious after the attack and told police the men approached from behind as he left the 7-Eleven in the 400 block of 8th Street in Southeast D.C.

The men then used their fists to beat Coltrane in the face and body. And the men took his wallet holding $60 in cash before hitting him in the body and face.

"I think they are animals,” said Coltrane’s brother-in-law, David Bean. “Because when you sit back and prey on a 60-year-old man with a cane and two grown men attack him for $60, that's a sad state of our neighborhood. We got to work on these issues. There's something wrong with this and there is no excuse. No matter how hard you had it, he had it hard too, but he was trying to do the right thing.”

Bean said his brother-in-law was on disability and was up at the 7-Eleven buying a pack of cigarettes.

"I'm having a hard time dealing with it,” he said. “I couldn't believe it. I thought it would be a nightmare and I would wake up, but that didn't happen. I have lost a brother-in-law and a good man.”

D.C. police released a couple of different angles from the camera inside the store.

There is a $25,000 reward if you can tell detectives where they can find the men.

Family members say Coltrane had a multitude of health problems and was unable to work.

A few years ago, he lost a son to violence. Carlton Coltrane Jr. was stabbed to death while serving time for bank robbery at a federal prison in Louisiana.
