3 Structures Collapse In 2 Days On 1 Block In West Philly

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Part of a row home in West Philadelphia collapsed overnight, and residents say it's the third building to come down in two days on that block.

The latest collapse happened on the 6100 block of Glenmore Avenue around 11 p.m. Sunday.

Two people were inside at the time. They were not hurt.

Members of the family that rent the home say they've been complaining about problems for months.

Officials say the home is now condemned, and no one is allowed back inside.

The city's Department of Licenses & Inspections had already been sealing other buildings also ready to come down.

Fox 29's Thalia Perez talked to a resident in the neighborhood on Monday.

"We've called numerous times about that house and nothing's being done about it," said homeowner Joan Goldberg.

Dangerously dilapidated homes surround Goldberg's house on the 6100 block of Glenmore Avenue.

Inspectors on Monday, placed notifications outside of the houses.

In total, 15 houses have been deemed "structurally unsafe" with a yellowish sticker and 6 “imminently dangerous" with an orange sticker.

"They're not doing their job," Goldberg said.

Goldberg was pleading with inspectors to do something while they were checking out the shifting bricks.

She fears the falling home with cracks in the basement foundation wall will eventually pull her house down.

However, with about 2500 properties already on the city’s structurally unsafe list and another 500 waiting to be demolished, who knows where she'll fall on the list.

"It's a bigger problem than most people realize. We need to have a more comprehensive approach to looking at all the vacant properties in the city," said Scott Muldering with the Department of Licenses & Inspections.

Mulderig says one of the biggest hurdles is tracking absentee homeowners down.

“We're in the starting process. We're gonna get more aggressive with our approach and get a handle on this," he said.
