GERMANTOWN, Tenn. (FOX13) - There have been a lot of great businesses that have been started in people's garages.

Apple. Hewlett Packard. Harley-Davidson.

In each case there came a day when it was time to move on to bigger and better accommodations. It's the price of success.

Another successful Germantown business is facing that moving day. But this time the birthplace is a barn.

A Germantown barn is not exactly the kind of place you would expect a successful ladies handbag company to launch from, but that is exactly what happened. Katie Kalsi is now in boutiques and department stores all over the southeast.

But it was just a few years ago that it was just her and a friend.

"We had done the first 24 in 2007, so yeah and that's where everything got started," Kalsi said. "Marlo Thomas and Andy Thomas and St. Jude they had called and had 20 sent out to them just for friends and family and stuff like that. So that's really how I got started and just kept on building. Did them myself and I had a friend helping me sew them."

The novelty of Kalsi's handbags are the hand-painted leather strap that is interchangeable. She now gets tweets from her fans with KK sightings. That's a Katie Kalsi sighting. They send in pictures of women all over the country with a Katie Kalsi designer bag hanging over their shoulder.

The barn where it all started is on land that is going to be developed so it is time to move. But that is good news for anyone wanting a good deal on a Kalsi designer handbag. Everything must go. They will be selling everything from saddles to designer bags.

Even though the birthplace of Kalsi's designer bags is going to fade away, she is looking for her new headquarters and has big plans for the future.

"I plan on being a lifestyle brand," Kalsi said. "I want do as much as possible. I love what I do, I really do and you really have to love what you do because it takes a lot of dedication."
