Threats Prompt New Procedures At Catholic High School

Posted: Updated:

New procedures start Monday at Saints John Neumann and Maria Goretti Catholic High School in South Philadelphia after a second threat in just seven days.

Classes ended early Friday after reports there was a gun inside the building.

Shaken up parents picked up their children from Neumann-Goretti on Friday after police received that report of a student bringing a gun to school. The report, called in at 8:30 a.m., turned out to be false.

Police say it appears to be a prank.

"A few kids seemed shaken up, actually. I mean, no one ran out of the building screaming or anything, but definitely rushed to their parents," one teen said.

A student snapped a picture showing kids lining up to be let out.

Classes dismissed at midday so officers could search the school. No weapon was ever found.

This threat was taken especially seriously after a student was expelled for allegedly having a hit list with the names of students last Friday.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia says the two incidents don't appear to be connected.

Neighbor Kathy Pugliese says more has to be done to keep students and families safe.

"What is the archdiocese going to suggest to us to say we're going to protect you, we're going to protect our children, we're going to protect the family, we're going to protect homes down here? What are they going to say? The archdiocese has got to step up," Pugliese said.

A spokesperson for the archdiocese says the school will discuss new safety protocols with parents by Monday, and those protocols will be in place by the time students are back in school.

"I think they need a little more security. They are too low-key," Pugliese said.

We're told there is going to be a police presence on campus until the last day of school on June 13, FOX 29's Sabina Kuriakose reported Friday night from live outside the school.
