Man Remembered As Hero For Saving Others From Wildfire

Posted: Updated:

Guthrie, OK-A man died trying to save his neighbors from the wildfire in Guthrie, Oklahoma, on Sunday night.

The fire killed 56-year-old Johnnie Ray Knox after he gave his truck to a neighboring family to flee.

The neighbors begged him to get into the truck, but he said he was going to fight the fire.

Other neighbors thought he got out safely when they saw his truck leave.

Friends and family say he was a generous man who would do anything for anybody.

"We just ask why. It's just tragic here, you're almost speechless when you see it," said family friend Vicki Dickerson. "A part of me is mad at Johnnie for not leaving, but then I think he's a hero for letting that other family survive.”

Another neighbor said Johnnie was focused on fighting the fire and saving others.

"We stopped him, I begged him, I said, Johnnie, get in the truck, he said girl get out of here, I’m fixing to fight this fire,” said neighbor Dorothy Shea Watson. "I couldn't believe he didn't get in the car, like he was adamant on he's going to fight this fire. He said it wasn't even going to reach here.”

Knox leaves behind three daughters and eight grandchildren with another grandchild on the way.
